Drawing comparisons with the work of Mike Leigh and John Cassavetes, Bujalski has created "a funny and stealthily affecting portrait of youthful powerlessness and frustration" (Los Angeles Times).
On its release in the US, the film made several critics' top ten lists, including the New York Times.
