Marley, Stephen - Mind Control
Releasedatum: 20 maart 2007
Finally out is Stephen Marley's long awaited debutalbum called 'Mind Control'. It was definitely worth waiting for this multitalented member of the Marley family to drop his album.
The album contains an extremely fine mixture of Reggae and HipHop flavoured with some R&B and Dancehall, and there are moments during this album that you can drift off and imagine you're listening to a long-lost B side from his dad.
Stephen, the fourth of Bob's ten recognized children, possesses a vocal tone that's extremely close to his dad's, and perhaps more important: he's also blessed with some of Bob's songwriting gift. He co-wrote and produced most of brother Damian's albums like 'Welcome to Jamrock' and demonstrates an even broader range on 'Mind Control'.
'Hey Baby' features a verse from Mos Def and some skillful light R&B production; 'The Traffic Jam' is a stripped-down dancehall romp (containing a beatboxsample of wich Stephen refuses to tell who did it); 'Iron Bars' -- which has the impassioned refrain "Let me out, let me out/I'm an angry lion" -- could be a roots-reggae classic.
Other guests featuring on this album are brothers Damian and Julian, Spragga Benz and Ben Harper. 'Mind Control' does justice to Robert Nesta Marley's legacy, and that's saying a lot!
