Various Artists - Studio One Roots
Releasedatum: 24 oktober 2001
Third release in the excellent Studio One/Soul Jazz cooperation series. After the focus on Rockers and Soul this one deals strictly with Roots. Although Studio One was always more focused on dancehall and radio reggae, Studio One Roots is made for meditating rather than dancing. Deep, deep Rastafarian songs as ‘Meditation’ by Count Ossie & the Cyclones, ‘Far Beyond’ by Horsemouth Wallace, ‘African Challenge’ by Zoot Simms and ‘Lumumba’ by Bunny & Skitter are mixed with hits like Freddy McGregor’s ‘Africa Here I Come’ (yes, it’s the 10”mix), Willy Williams’ ‘Addis A Baba’, The Gaylads’ ‘Africa and ‘Winston Jarret’s ‘Fear Not’. Add a few more scorchers like Alton Ellis’ ‘Blackish White’, Cornell Campbell’s ‘Natty Don’t Go’, The Black Brothers’ ‘School Children’ and Linton Cooper’s ‘You’ll Get Your Pay and you know this album is a classic. And yet I didn’t even mention the vocal cut to ‘Drum Song’ by Devon Russell and two instrumentals by the Sound Dimension (‘Congo Rock’) and by the legendary Lennie Hibbert (‘More Creation’).
