Genius producer Lee Perry’s career has known many of ups and downs. Usually people refer to the Black Ark period as his most creative. Certainly everything that came after he burned down the ark is crap compared to the stuff he created inside his own studio. However, before he built his own studio and created the Black Ark sound, he produced some fine gems with people like Junior Byles, The Silvertones, U Roy, Dillinger and of course The Wailers. This album focuses on the period (71-74), it doesn’t focus on the hits but on the rarities. And rarities there are on this one, never before released dubs of songs that are themselves very rare and collectable like The Gatherers’ ’Start Over’, The Stingers’ ‘Forward Up’ and Jimmy Riley’s ‘Thanks and Praise’. More familiar rhythm tracks belong to Leo Graham’s ‘Three Blind Mice’ and U Roy’s ‘Stick Together’, but the mixing on this album is different from all known versions. Most other tracks are unknown to us and some sound like they’ve been mixed for soundsystem use only. This one is a must for all Lee Perry’s fans and dub fanatics.
