Autumn Afternoon, An (Region 3) - Ozu, Yasujiro
Releasedatum: 13 december 2004
Hirayama Shuhei, a middle-aged widower, is reluctant to marry off his lovable daughter, Michiko, though she is already twenty-four and has secretly given her heart to a young man in the neighborhood. Hirayama realizes how miserable his daughter would become if she has to stay single and look after him when he meets his secondary school teacher who also has a daughter facing the same dilemma. Michiko finally gets married and Hirayama returns home to a gaping emptiness after the wedding. Completed after his mother's death, Ozu's final film is a unique artistic testament and perhaps an attempt to distill the wisdom of sixty years and fifty-three films into a single work. Both humorous and heart-breaking, this serenely beautiful swan song sees his rigorous but poetic style honed to absolute perfection.
