Various Artists - Studio One Soul
Releasedatum: 15 mei 2001
Follow up to the highly acclaimed ‘Studio One Rockers’, This album focuses on the Afro-American influences on Brentford Road. Or, to put it in plain English, the soul side of Studio One. All songs are soul covers where some, like Leroy Sibbles’ ‘Express Yourself’(orig. by Charles Wright) or Jackie Mittoo’s ‘Time Is Tight’(Booker T) keep it in a soul style. Most Tracks however see the soul originals remade in a reggae or rock steady fashion. The Heptones’ ’Message From A black Man’(Temptations), Norma Frazer’s ‘First Cut Is The Deepest’(P.P.Arnold), Ken Boothe’s ‘Keep Me Hanging On’(Supremes) are all classics, but there are many more on this album. Jerry Jones ‘Still Waters’(4 Tops), Senior Soul’s ‘Is It Because I’m Black’(Syl Johnson) and Richard Ace’s ‘Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love’(Barry White) sound better than the original songs. Jackie Mittoo’s extravagant organ solo in Otis Gayle’s ‘I’ll Be Around’ makes the original Spinners song sound inferior. I haven’t even mentioned the songs by Alton Ellis, Willy Williams, Chosen Few, Sound Dimension, Ken Parker and The Eternals, so imagine how strong this album really is; a scorcher!
