During Bastille Day celebrations in a sleepy rural backwater, the village postman (Tati) sets out to modernise his mail delivery system, with no more than a bicycle at his disposal. Jacques Tati's Jour De Fete was an instantaneous success, winning huge public acclaim as well as a best script award at the Venice Festival. Gently satirising the modern age's obsession with labour-saving devices, the film has proved to be enduringly popular in its portrayal of the simple postman's hapless endeavours.
