Various Artists - Studio One Funk (Souljazz)
Releasedatum: 20 september 2004
Soul Jazz continue their Coxsone tribute series, with this 'Studio 1 Funk' collection. Great music from the legendary label, but the name doesn't really cover the content: 'Funk' is defined in such a way that the album features some strong roots deejay tracks like 'See A Man Face' by Prince Moonie and 'Beat down Babylon' by Prince Francis. Also present are some straight forward reggaes instrumentals like Im's 'Idleberg' and 'Love Jah', Vin Gordon's 'Steady Beat' and Roy Richard's 'Another Thing'. Even the strong Ska track '007' is considered funk by the compilers. The majority of the tunes are funk or funky reggae though. Jackie Mittoo covers his inspirator Booker T. with 'Hang Em High'.The Underground Vegetables do a remake of 'Melting Pot', the same thing happens to 'Shaft'(Im Brooks) and 'It's A Shame' (Alton Ellis). Delroy Wilson's 'Funky Broadway' is a medly of soul and funk songs. Other featured artists include Pablove Black, Lloyd Williams, Lee Arab, Devon Russell and The Sharks. Another scorcher from Studio 1!
