Stillman, Whit - Metropolitan (1990) (Criterion Collection Uk Import)
Releasedatum: 7 mei 2018

Whit Stillman makes his directorial debut with this comedy of manners, for which he also provides the script. In New York, quiet middle-class student Tom (Edward Clements) finds himself adopted by a bunch of wealthy upper East Side debutantes and their boyfriends. All his preconceptions about the rich are questioned as they reveal themselves through conversation. 'Metropolitan' forms a loose trilogy with the director's other two films, 'Barcelona' and 'The Last Days of Disco'.
Synopsis

THE WITTY, OSCAR-NOMINATED BREAKTHROUGH FROM WHIT STILLMAN
One of the great American independent films of the 1990s, the surprise hit Metropolitan by writer-director WHIT STILLMAN (Damsels in Distress) is a sparkling comedic chronicle of a middle-class young man’s romantic misadventures in New York City’s debutante society. Stillman’s deft, literate dialogue and hilariously highbrow observations earned this first film an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay. Alongside the wit and sophistication, though, lies a tender tale of adolescent anxiety.
