Various Artists - Ragga Ragga Ragga! (2003)
Releasedatum: 23 april 2003
Nuff people are complaining about the flood of one riddim dancehall albums that are recently being release by VP and Greensleeves alike. Good music, but you really have to love a riddim if you want to hear 20 versions. Now Greensleeves have released a brand new Ragga Ragga Ragga album, which contains no more than 2 versions per riddim, so there is no chance of this one to get boring after 10 tracks, like so many one riddim albums. The selection is marvellous: The great Beenieman returns triumphantly to his hardcore roots with his biggest hits of this year, ‘the very x-rated ‘Red Red’, his current smash ‘Row Like A Boat’ and the brand new, Missy Elliott inspired, ‘Dicky’. The #1 deejay of this time, Elephantman rides the same Jammy$ riddim on ‘Fuck U Sign’. He is also represented by the controversial ‘Chiney Ting’ and ‘Mr Lover’. That last song rides the ‘Clappas’ riddim as does ‘Under Mi Sensi’ by Alozad, Vegas and newcomer Hollow Point. Ward 21 do ‘Petrol’ on ‘Peenie Peenie’ and ‘Rhyme’ on the ‘Krazy’ riddim. The latter is produced by the hottest label of the moment: Don Corleon, who is also responsible for the ‘Mad Ants’ riddim (Vybes Kartel & Wayne Marshall’s ‘New Millenium’) and ‘Egyptian’( Vybes Kartel’s ‘Sweet To The Body’). Jamaica’s most succesfull producer at the moment is Lenky, who’s ‘Diwalli’ riddim is currently doing the business in the Billboard top 100 with Sean Paul’s ‘Get Busy’ and Wayne Wonder’s ‘No Letting Go’. This album features two pieces of the follow-up ‘Masterpiece’, Bountykiller’s ‘Raging Storm’ and ‘Ever Blazing’ by the hitmaker Sean Paul himself. Buju’s ‘No Lame Thing’rides the same ‘Star Wars’ riddim as does ‘Real Badman by Buccanneer, Bountykiller and TOK on Buccaneer’s own Opera House label. Wayne Marshall’s ‘Going To The Party’ and Bountykiller & Angel Doolas’ ‘Pum Pum’ come courtesy of Big Jeans. Last but not least, Baby G produced Mad Cobra’s and Keke flints ‘Lazy Girl’. Although 2003 is not even halfway yet, it will be hard for any record company to come up with a better selection. Until that happens, this certainly will be the best dancehall album of the year.
