Delahaye, Junior - Reggae Showcase (Wackies)
Releasedatum: 3 juni 2002
Alright, many people might never have heard of this man, but take it from me: Lloyd ‘Bullwackie’ Barnes is a legend. This producer, who has his roots in The Black Ark and Studio One, first became noted in the late seventies, early eighties. This time he ran a studio in New York with it’s own distinctive sound. Well influenced by Perry and Dodd, the Wackies sound’s trademark was a distorted treble and a very deep bass. The last 20 odd years almost the complete backcatalogue of the legendary Wackies label was highly collectable and fetched huge prices on auctions, due to the fact that Bullwackie changed his direction in the mid eighties and concentrated on producing mediocre product exclusively for the Japanese market. Also some financial problems led to the fact that almost none of his productions were re-released. Recently Barnes struck a re-issue deal with German based EFA that has lead to several wicked releases like this one. Junior Delahaye, a singer that is almost unknown outside of Wackies House Of Music, is featured on this showcase album. He sings a mix of original roots tunes and lovers remakes, but it’s the riddims that are Wackies strongpoint. Luckily, this being a showcase album, all tracks come in a 12”style, vocal followed by the dub version. Just listen to the very slow rub-a-dub, the highpitched treble and feel the bass rumbling underneath. Wackies REALLY should be heard on a soundsystem, only than can one fully appriciate the sound.
