THE LAST ROUND (Il Conte è Chiuso)) is a gritty, violent updating of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS and FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE. Former middleweight boxing champion Carlos Monzón stars as a drifter who arrives in town with nothing but a music box and pictures of two dead women. Offering himself as a hired hand to the murderous Manzetti clan (led by Luc Merenda, star of GAMBLING CITY), Marco makes a side deal with the Manzetti’s rivals, the Belmondo family (headed by THE RETURN OF SABATA’s Mario Brega), setting the two gangs against one another in a bloody power struggle that will leave more dead than alive. Revenge is the motive… and hell to pay for both guilty and innocent. Directed by spaghetti western veteran Stelvio Massi (I AM SARTANA… TRADE YOUR GUNS FOR A COFFIN), this obscure Italo-crime film was written by Piero Regnoli, best known for his contributions to Italian Gothic horror (I Vampiri, THE PLAYGIRLS AND THE VAMPIRE). Regnoli also contributed to the screenplays for BURIAL GROUND and NIGHTMARE CITY… but here engages in an altogether different kind of bloodletting. THE LAST ROUND was shot by veteran Italian cinematographer Franco Delli Colli, a former camera operator for Luchino Visconti, Piero Paolo Pasolini and Sergio Leone who went on to lens some of the most distinctive Italian exports, including THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, DJANGO, KILL… IF YOU LIVE, SHOOT!, STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER and ZEDER. The film’s melancholy musical score is by Luis Enriquez Bacalov, whose orchestrations grace films from Sergio Corbucci’s DJANGO to Quentin Tarantino’s KILL BILL, VOL. 1-2. Only available in America via bootleg videotapes, THE LAST ROUND is presented by NoShame as a deluxe collector’s edition DVD edition, remastered from the original negative and bursting with so many extras that it should be against the law.
