In a small Crimean town occupied by the White Guards, a film group from Moscow is making a salon drama, Slave of Love. To play the lead parts are invited silent screen stars Olga Vozneseskaya (her prototype is the celebrated turn-of-the-century Russian actress Vera Kholodnaya) and Vladimir Maksakov. The film's cameraman Victor Pototsky illegally films arrests and shootings carried out by the Denikin counterintelligence in the town. In love with Olga, he tries to explain to that gorgeous, not at all involved in politics, woman the true meaning of the events taking place in Russia...
