The year is 2022. New York City is inhabited by more than forty million people, half of whom are out of work. The cost of living is crippling and death is available on a voluntary basis. Based on Harry Harrison's 'Make Room! Make Room!', Soylent Green is stars Charlton Heston as a Manhattan cop trying to solve a murder in the overpopulated, overheated city. His roommate (a necessity in the overcrowded metropolis), played by Edward G. Robinson in his last film role, tells him of a better time on Earth before the depletion of resources but Heston doesn't care. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the film boasts a successful mix of mystery and bleak futuristic vision. Joseph Cotten co-stars as the man whose murder results in the revelation of a shocking secret.
